As a painter I’ve been more interested in landscape and the world “out there” than in any other subject. Perhaps this is in response to growing up on the shore of a vast yet tranquil inland sea, Lake Michigan, and on the edge of an equally vast and level prairie. Even in my most representational paintings, I focused on horizons and expanses of land, water, and sky that depict a distant, if not unreachable, reality.

Over time my work has become more subtle, atmospheric, and less objectively descriptive. The paintings have grown in size, employing post-minimal, organic compositions, complex yet seemingly monochromatic color, and subtly gradated and finished surfaces.

The effect is that of an expanse of potentially dramatic elements overlaid by calm, signifying a remove from the immediate and toward the contemplative. In the end these paintings are about an internal exploration and about a personal environment that reveals itself gradually over time.
